Why can't most Americans cut foreign speakers some slack?

We are not all like that. I love foreign accents and find them very endearing (i love foreign languages even more). We actually are much more tolerant of bad accents than they are in some other countries like France for example. They have NO patience sometimes for a bad american accent while speaking french. It is not only Americans that do this. We just get a bad rep.
