Why are Muslims not allowed to have dogs for a pet?

Does the Qu'ran forbid dogs as pets or is this a rule found in Hadith books? Are not all animals created by God? Shouldn't we to treat animals with compion and not to abuse them? Don't the animals, together with all creatures, praise God, even if this praise is not expressed in human language?
